India vaccinates record 80 lakh people on Day 1 of revised vaccine policy

The last time India’s single-day vaccine coverage was the highest was on April 2 when 42,65,157 doses were administered.

New Delhi: Marking a turning point in vaccinating over a billion plus population for the Covid-19 pandemic, India today administered record 75 lakh vaccinations in just 1 day. This marks big jump in numbers even as a nation races against time to inoculate such mammoth population to keep Covid strains in check.

At its vaccination drive peak in March, about 35-40 lakh vaccine doses were administered on daily basis however it tapered down to as low as 6-7 lakh in a day. But, with new invigorated and energized drive, the nation is certainly moving on a robust path.

The record numbers come on a day when Centre’s ‘Revised Guidelines for Covid Vaccination’ comes into effect. From today, all adults will be provided free anti-Covid jabs.

5 BJP states record highest vaccination, Delhi’s numbers unimpressive

5 BJP-ruled states such as Madhya Pradesh, Karnataka, Uttar Pradesh, Gujarat and Haryana took lead by conducting special drives. Madhya Pradesh recorded 12 lakh vaccinations, Karnataka 8.73 lakh and UP 5.84 lakh till 5pm.

Delhi numbers are yet to confirmed but reports suggest that it failed to post impressive numbers despite raising hue and cry about shortage of vaccines recently.

Nearly 50 lakh vaccinations so far — out of 69.25 lakh and counting — are of the 18-44 category.

Revised Vaccine strategy yields astonishing results

The centre started providing vaccines free of charge to all above 18 from today and took back control of vaccination from states, reversing a policy change that was enforced just about a month ago.

The new policy of India’s vaccination strategy in which the Central Government will provide free Covid-19 vaccine to all Indian citizens above 18 years of age across states will begin today.

Uttar Pradesh Shocker: UP Man given first dose of Covaxin, gets Covishield in second session of vaccination

Centre’s new vaccine policy: Top points

Centre would procure 75% of vaccines and give them to states for free distribution to all citizens above the age of 18.

Pre-registration on Cowin.gov.in will not be mandatory as all government and private vaccination centres would provide onsite registration facility. Though prior registration is not required, all vaccination will be documented on the Co-Win portal. Beneficiaries can be registered on the site before vaccination.

Vaccine doses provided free of cost by the Centre will be allocated to states/UTs based on criteria such as population, disease burden and the progress of vaccination.

Private hospitals will continue to buy the remaining 25 per cent and inoculate those willing to pay for their jabs. They can’t, however, charge more than ₹150 as a service charge per dose over the fixed price of the vaccine.

The government has also capped the price of the three vaccines currently available in the country – ₹780 for Covishield, ₹1,410 for Covaxin and ₹1,145 for Sputnik V.
