Kanhaiya Lal killing: Niece & family demand capital punishment for murderers

She demanded capital punishment as according to her in future, other people will be encouraged by such incidents. 

New Delhi: The niece of tailor Kanhaiya Lal, who was murdered in daylight in Rajasthan’s Udaipur, demands justice. She said, “We want justice, they should be hanged.” The murder took place on June 29 at Kanhaiya Lal’s shop.

On June 29, two men entered Kanhaiya’s shop as customers, but rather they slit his throat to murder him. Later, they also posted a video on social media where they told that they are avenging an insult to Islam, indirectly referring to the remarks against Prophet made by suspended Bharatiya Janata Party leader Nupur Sharma. The two men were also seen threatening Prime Minister Narendra Modi in the video. They were soon arrested for the crime committed.

The victim’s niece said that the accused tortured and killed her maternal uncle and want justice for him. She demanded capital punishment as according to her in future, other people will be encouraged by such incidents.  “Today, they have killed us, tomorrow they will kill others,” she added. She also questioned the police department who, even after knowing that Kanhaiya was getting life threats, did not take any action rather they just asked to compromise.

Kanhaiya’s last rites took place in presence of a large number of people. Police were deployed to maintain the law and order, and the procession was taken out peacefully. At the funeral, people raised the slogans like  ‘Kanhaiya Lal Amar Rahe’ (translating to long live Kanhaiya Lal). People there also demanded justice in form of capital punishment for the accused.

The two accused are identified as Ghosh Mohammad and Riyaz Akhtari. Internet is shut down in the state for 24 hours, while section 144 has been imposed for the next one month. A team of the National Investigation Agency (NIA) has reached Udaipur for the probe.

The Rajasthan government has promised to provide jobs on contract to the two next of kin of the deceased. Apart from this, the Gehlot government will give a compensation of Rs 31 lakh to the next of kin.
