Congress swept the state assembly elections and as per the counting by Election Commission, the party has won 119 seats and is leading on 17. With 224 seats in total, a party needs 113 to form the government in the state.
BJP, which had the government with Basavaraj Bommai as the Chief Minister, lost the elections as they earned 56 seats and are leading on eight seats.
PM Modi was one of the star campaigners for the BJP and held several road shows and rallies before the state underwent voting on May 10. While he lauded the state governance, and targeted Congress on issues like ‘Bajrang Bali’ and ‘The Kerala Story’, his efforts could not bring in the desired results.
Meanwhile, Chhattisgarh CM Bhupesh Baghel and Congress leader Jairam Ramesh called it a defeat of PM Modi.
Most of the exit polls predicted a hung Assembly but Congress managed to win the majority share to form the government. Celebrations broke at Congress’ offices in various states and the party leaders were spotted dancing on the song ‘Naatu Naatu’.
