Karnataka meat controversy: Singer-actor Lucky Ali shares a FB note to explain ‘halal’

Amid the new controversy in Karnataka over halal meat, Singer Lucky Ali wrote a post on his Facebook account.

New Delhi: Amid the new controversy in Karnataka over halal meat, Singer Lucky Ali wrote a post on his Facebook account. In the post, Ali has tried to explain halal meat and also shed a light n why products are certified by the name.

Notably, this is the second recent controversy in the state that erupted after Hijab (headscarf) in classrooms. However, the debate over the hijab ended after the Karnataka High Court upheld a ban on hijab in class.

Lucky Ali’s comment came as surprise as he had last year clarified that he was not interested in politics and wanted to stay away from it.

Ali shared the post on Sunday on the social media platform. He wrote, ”Dearly Beloved Indian brothers and sisters hope you’re all well..I wanted to explain something to you…’halal’ is definitely not for anybody outside of Islam..it’s just that any Muslim will not buy any product just like their Jewish relatives who understand Halal as being similar to Kosher and will not buy any product until and unless its certified that the ingredients within a product are according to his or her consumable limitations.”

”Now companies want to sell to everyone including the Muslim and Jewish populations, so to sell their product they have to label it as Halal certified or Kosher certified…otherwise Muslims and Jews would just not buy from them, but if the people are so bothered by the word ‘halal ‘they should remove it from their counters but one can’t foresee whether their sales would be the same as they were used to..” added Ali.

The 63-year-old actor-singer ended his post by saying, ”with love…and understanding…”

It is important to note that the controversy over halal started after the incident of April 1. As per the CCTV footage of the day, around 10-15 men in a hotel in Karnataka’s Bhadravathi threatened the staff not to serve halal food.

Later, another incident was also reported that Bajrang Dal members assaulted a chicken shop when he refused to sell non-halal meat.

What is halal meat?

According to the practice followed in Islam, a Muslim will not consume any meat other than halal meat. In this process, an animal or poultry is killed by cutting its jugular vein, carotid artery, and windpipe. Moreover, all blood should be drained from the carcass. During this process, a Muslim also invokes the god’s name and recites a one-line blessing, known as Tasmiya or Shahada.

Before the above-mentioned incident, BJP General Secretary CT Ravi, on 31 March, said in Bengaluru, ”The halal meat business is a kind of ‘economic jihad’. The concept of Halal meat means that they can do business among themselves & consume Halal meat only among their people. What’s wrong in pointing it as wrong..”
