Notably, Pawar has been holding the office since the year 1999 when he founded the party with P.A. Sangma and Tariq Anwar. They decided to found the party after splitting from Indian National Congress. At present, the General Secretary of the party is Sunil Tatkare and Praful Patel.
From NCP, Ajit Pawar is the current leader of the Opposition in the 288-member Maharashtra Assembly. In Maharashtra, the BJP came to power at the end of June this year after a Rebel group of Shiv Sena led by CM Eknath Shinde left the party.
Owing to defection in the Shiv Sena, the NCP has now become the second largest party in the assembly with 53 MLAs, followed by the INC.
