New Delhi: In Punjab, the Aam Aadmi Party under the leadership of Bhagwant Mann won the 2022 Assembly election on March 10. On some seats,  AAP candidates not only registered their victory but also defeated veteran politicians. One of such seats was Amritsar East, where Navjot Singh Sidhu lost the 2022 election.

In this election, the controversial cricketer-turned-politician lost against Jeevan Jyot Kaur in her maiden attempt. Kaur’s victory raises a question in mind — Who is Jeevan Jyot Kaur?

Ahead of the election, Navjot Singh Sidhu was confident enough to conquer anyone from the Amritsar East seat. The Congress leader even challenged Shiromani Akali Dal leader Bikram Singh Majithia to fight election from here. Accepting his challenge, Majithia also filed his nomination from the seat.

Against both senior leaders, AAP fielded a woman, Jeevan Jyot Kaur. Kaur works as a social activist who has been fighting for women’s menstrual hygiene. For her work, she is regarded as the ”pad-woman” of Amritsar. Moreover, she worked for the S.H.E. Society’s chairperson. It is a non-profit organisation to create a drug-free society.

She is known for distributing environmentally friendly sanitary napkins in Punjabi schools, rural areas, and slums. During her election campaign, she asked public support in the election for votes on Amritsar’s issue.

Jeevan Jyot Kaur’s social works helped her to defeat heavy-height politician Sidhu. Sidhu had won in 2012 and 2017 as well. Besides the Congress leader, she also defeated Bikram Singh Majithia who came at number third in the final results. However, Majithia earlier used to fight from Punjab’s Majitha constituency. Majithia earlier won the seat in  2007, followed by his wins in 2012 and 2017.

Kaur received 36% of the total votes, while Sidhu got 30% votes, followed by Majithia (23%), according to the Election Commission of India.
