Mumbai doctor ‘adopts’ Dalit girl, to fund her education in IIT BHU; Allahabad HC pays her admission fee

Dr Sonal Chauhan (working as Consultant MD, DMRE, MBBS) at Wadia Children Hospital filed a petition before the court and expressed desire to sponsor the entire study of Dalit Student at IIT BHU for Mathematics and Computing (5 years) course.

New Delhi: In a benevolent move, a Mumbai-based doctor has come forward to sponsor the studies of a Dalit girl student who secured admission to IIT BHU but didn’t have money to pay her fees.

The doctor extended a helping hand towards the deprived child after Sanskriti Ranjan filed a petition in the Allahabad High Court following loss of her seat at the reputed institute over inability to submit fees.

Allahabad High Court paid her admission fees last week, owing to the financial hardship faced by Dalit student. Justice Dinesh Kumar Singh directed the BHU administration to admit her and he himself volunteered to contribute Rs 15,000/- towards fee for allocation of seat.

Following this, Dr Sonal Chauhan (working as Consultant MD, DMRE, MBBS) at Wadia Children Hospital filed a petition before the court and expressed desire to sponsor the entire study of Dalit Student at IIT BHU for Mathematics and Computing (5 years) course.

After the intervention of court, Sanskriti Ranjan has been given admission to the Institute. Taking cognizance of the doctor’s compassionate act, the court in its word of appreciation said, “This is quite heartening that the capable section of the society is willing to sponsor the study of a meritorious girl student from lower strata of the society.”

Meanwhile, petitioner’s counselor has informed the court that many IIT alumni have also come forward for monetary help to the Dalit student after they were seized of the matter.
