‘New low for Pakistan…’: MEA issues statement condemning Pakistan Foreign Minister’s remarks on PM Modi

MEA said that Bhutto’s frustration should be directed towards the masterminds who have made terrorism a part of Pakistan’s state policy and the nation needs to change its own mindset.

New Delhi: Pakistan’s Foreign Minister Bilawal Bhutto Zardari gave objectionable remarks about PM Narendra Modi and External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar, in the UN Security Council Open Debate. Indian External Affairs Ministry has issued a statement as a reply to the remarks. Bilawal Bhutto said that the ‘butcher of Gujarat’ is the PM of India and MEA replied by saying that these were ‘uncivilised’ remarks and a ‘new low’ for Pakistan.

Taking the context of Vijay Diwas, the statement said that Pakistan’s Foreign Minister has forgotten that this day in 1971 was a result of the genocide by the Pakistani regime against ethnic Bengalis & Hindus. The statement said that Bhutto should have listened to Anjali Kulthe, a nurse who saved the lives of 20 pregnant women in the attacks of 26/11, at the UNSC. MEA said that Bhutto’s frustration should be directed towards the masterminds who have made terrorism a part of Pakistan’s state policy and the nation needs to change its own mindset.

The controversy began when Bhutto raised the Kashmir issue before the UNSC. It was followed by S Jaishankar slamming Bhutto and saying that Pakistan has been a host to the 9/11 attacks mastermind Osama bin Laden and the nation has attacked India’s Parliament, so Pakistan has no right to ‘sermonise’ in the UNSC. Replying to Pakistan’s FM said that Osama is dead but the ‘butcher of Gujarat’ is the Prime Minister of India. He added that Narendra Modi and S Jaishankar work for RSS, the organisation that draws inspiration from Hitler.

This exchange of words began at the UN Security Council Open Debate, a signature event held under India’s Presidency in New York. Bilawal Bhutto was also one of the 60 speakers at the UNSC.
