Owaisi & Omar wade into Karnataka hijab row, blame right wing mob for chaos but they too can’t escape criticism

A lot of people have taken exception to Owaisi’s remarks, who said that it was an attempt to milk the hijab controversy for political gains in ensuing UP assembly polls.

New Delhi: As the row over wearing hijab in Karnataka colleges rages on, the issue has been lapped up by AIMIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi & former J&K CM Omar Abdullah for taking on state govt as well as Centre as they claimed that the plight of Muslim girl students is being ignored & brushed aside deliberately.

Owaisi praised the Muslim women students for being strong & for standing up to ‘radicalised’ right wing students and blamed the Hindutav mobs for creating an ‘vitriolic’ atmosphere in the college campuses. Owaisi made these divisive remarks while addressing a public rally in UP’s Sambhal slated for assembly elections.

“Young Muslim women students in Karnataka have demonstrated great courage under extreme provocation from Hindutva mobs. Their conduct in pursuit of their constitutional rights has been exemplary. The state govt has been complicit in this evil behaviour,” Owaisi tweeted.

Owaisi also urged people to ‘stand against hatred & bullets being fired’ at them. Owaisi’s remarks come at a time when state chief minister announced closure of schools & college for 3 days to let good sense prevail & shield the educational institutions from division on religious lines.

A lot of people have taken exception to Owaisi’s remarks, who said that it was an attempt to milk the hijab controversy for political gains in ensuing UP assembly polls.

Hatred for Muslims being normalised, claims Omar

Omar Abdullah also made his angst clear against raging hijab row and claimed that hatred for Muslims was being normalised in the country.

“How brave these men are & how macho they must feel while targeting a lone young lady! Hatred for Muslims has been completely mainstreamed & normalised in India today. We are no longer a nation that celebrates our diversity, we want to punish & exclude people for it,” NC leader tweeted.

NC leader’s condemnation of the polarising incident in Karnataka is justified but equating it with targeted alienation & discrimination against Muslim women is going to the extreme. State government is in damage control mode and has already announced closure of educational institutions for 3 days. Moreover, Karnataka High Court is hearing petition from five students who have challenged college administration’s decision to restrict hijab in campuses.
