New Delhi: Punjab Chief Minister Amarinder Singh on Tuesday said that 81% of 401 samples sent by the Punjab government for genome sequencing have tested positive for the UK variant of Covid-19. The samples were sent for testing at National Centre for Disease Control.

With alarming numbers of UK variant of Coronavirus in the state, Punjab CM urged the Centre to widen its ongoing vaccination drive to include people younger than 60 years of age so that the younger and more prone population could be insulated from the contagious virus.

However, it has come to light that Punjab government is high on rhetoric but has really poor record in conducting the vaccination drive.

Highly placed sources claim that vaccination drive is very sluggish in the state, despite abundant supply of vaccines in the state.

Over 15 vaccines jabs sent to Punjab, only 6 lakh inoculated till date: Sources

Covishield @ Rs 200, Covaxin @ Rs 206: Govt procures 1.1 million & 55 lakh doses of SII & BBIL

Sources privy to details claim that till March 23, only 6.2 people have been inoculated with vaccine jab, however, the state has double the number of vaccines available in its kitty.

Centre has supplied more than 15 lakh vaccine doses to Punjab but only about 6 lakh have been vaccinated against virus. This itself speaks about the incompetency and slackness of Amarinder Singh govt in fighting off the pandemic.
