Row over Zee News, Congress threatens legal action; accuses it of twisting Rahul’s statement

The media had asked a question to Gandhi in the pretext of the incident, a clip of which was played by Zee News

New Delhi: Hours after DNA host Sudhir Chaudhary submitted his resignation from Zee Media, the Congress party confirmed that they are seeking to take legal action against the group’s Hindi news outlet called ‘Zee News’.

Congress’s objections come after the latter played a byte of Wayanad MP and former party president Rahul Gandhi, wherein he can be seen terming some miscreants as ‘children’.

Here’s what happened

Rahul Gandhi is currently on a visit to his parliamentary constituency Wayanad in Kerala. Recently, some miscreants vandalized Gandhi’s office in the region. One of the culprits was later identified as a CPM worker.

The media had asked a question to Gandhi in the pretext of the incident, a clip of which was played by Zee News.

In the clip, Gandhi can be heard saying that everywhere across the world, one can see that the idea of violence is adopted as a solution to issues.

“Though violence can never solve problems. Violence of any sort should be avoided… this is an act of irresponsible behaviour. But, I don’t have any anger or hostility towards them”.

In the video, Gandhi further referred the miscreants as ‘children’.

As in the byte, Rahul seems to be talking about the individuals who vandalised his office in Wayanad, though the host of the show refered the statement as a remark on the horrifying murder of Kanhaiya Kumar in Udaipur.

The news anchor further claimed that Gandhi called the murderers of Kanhaiya Kumar, who was killed on religious grounds in Rajasthan, as ‘children’.

Congress’ take on the misleading news:

The grand old party’s national spokesperson Supriya Shrinate took to microblogging site Twitter on Saturday and wrote, “Zee News has twisted Rahul Gandhi’s comment on Wayanad incident and has falsely associated it to the Udaipur murder. We will take legal action on the matter”.

Although Zee News has apologized in this matter, but the Congress is taking a tough stand on the issue. Zee anchor Rohit Ranjan wrote in his tweet along with a clip from his show, “Yesterday, in our show DNA, Rahul Gandhi’s statement was taken in the wrong context by linking it to the Udaipur incident, it was a human error for which our team is apologetic, we apologize for it”.
