New Delhi: Amid the raging controversy over alleged beautification of the grave of terrorist Yakub Memon, it has emerged that the Trustees of Baba Qabrastan were threatened by latter’s brother & gangsters Tiger Memon.
A leading channel claimed that it has accessed complaint letter of former Trustee of the graveyard, where he revealed that he was threatened by Tiger Memon to build a special grave for his brother Yakub Memon and if he fails to do so, he would be killed.
“When we refused to entertain the request of a special grave for Yakub, the cousin said Tiger wants to speak to you,” Parvesh Sarkar, a former trustee of graveyard reportedly said.
Jazil Navane, another trustee of the graveyard was also threatened by the gangster Tiger Memon’s aide.
They told the channel that they reported the matter to Waqf Board and also objected to special treatment for the Mumbai riots convict. They claim that they were stripped of their position after raising the matter to Waqf Board.
Baba Qabrastan in South Mumbai became the centre of controversy after pictures surfaced showing the beautification of Yakub Memon’s grave & also its glorification as a mazaar. It is here that Yakub Memon was buried after being executed over his role in 1993 Mumbai blasts.
Yakub Memon was hanged at Nagpur Central jail on July 30, 2015 over his involvement in the multiple blasts that rocked Mumbai in 1993, killing over 250 people and injuring more than 1400.
BJP leader Ram Kadam shared pictures of the flowers, marble slabs & LED lights being put to beautify the terror convict’s grave, however, the graveyard authorities denied the same and said that this was general practice to illuminate the property.
Following this, war of words broke out between BJP & Shiv Sena, with the former accusing Uddhav govt of being soft & sympathetic to the dreaded criminal.
Meanwhile, the Mumbai police has removed the LED lights put around the grave of Yakub Memon. It has launched probe into who and how the process of beautification of grave started.
