Describing him as one of key conspirators, the chargesheet says that he actively participated in the meetings of Jamaat-e-Islami and Popular Front of India (PFI).

New Delhi: The Delhi Police has made serious charges against Sharjeel Imam in its chargesheet on 2020 riots. Describing him as one of key conspirators, the chargesheet says that he actively participated in the meetings of Jamaat-e-Islami and Popular Front of India (PFI).

He held meeting with the core members of MSJ and also went to Jamia campus, where they incited and instigated students to fan violence, says the chargesheet.

Radical groups like PFI were directly under the scanner of Delhi Police for allegedly provoking people and providing financial muscle to stirs.

In prior hearings before court, Delhi Police hasn’t been unsparing of the rioters and claimed that Sharjeel Imam, Khalid Saifi and Umar Khalid acted as masterminds and played key role in mobilizing youth for joining violent stir.

Opposing their bail plea, the prosecution side claimed that the Delhi riots were part of a larger conspiracy and the protest sites were planned and organized.

According to notes accessed by Delhi police, these people were part of the ‘conspiracy group’ who planned and laid out map for organized & concerted protests at several spots of the city.

It also told court in last hearing that the incendiary speeches was written by Sharjeel Imam. And, the motive behind it was not CAA or NRC but about stoking apprehensions & fear in the minds of Muslims about these two provisions.
