Sidhu’s show of strength at Golden Temple, but Covid norms openly violated; no mask, no social distancing

More than 60 legislators and hundreds of supporters gathered to welcome Sidhu. The huge gathering at Golden temple was open violation of Covid-19 protocols.

New Delhi: Amid the fierce tussle within the Punjab CM Captain Amarinder Singh, newly elected PCC chief Navjot Sidhu held show of strength at Golden Temple in Amritsar on Wednesday.

More than 60 legislators and hundreds of supporters gathered at the venue to welcome Sidhu. The show of strength was apparent from the huge gathering at Golden temple while Sidhu descended to Amritsar for paying obeisance to God but what was obvious – was open violation of Covid-19 protocols.

Not a single person was seen wearing mask. Social distancing norms went for a toss as Sidhu’s supporters rubbed shoulders with each other to show proximity to the leader. This comes despite the fact that Coronavirus went on rampage in the state during peak and the Captain Amarinder Singh govt was forced to impose strong restrictions/lockdown to contain the spread.

Leave aside concern for Covid-19 pandemic, the MLAs along with Sidhu also did a photoshoot on the stairs of the Golden Temple. In name of political posturing, Sidhu and his aides went to extremes and showed what scant regard they had for Corona protocol.

It will be interesting to see whether Captain government will crack the whip on Sidhu & supporters for this act, given the hostility between two camps.

Meanwhile, Sidhu and Captain camps are engaged in verbal rhetoric for sometime now. Captain supporters have asserted that Sidhu will have to apologize for making peace with the Punjab CM. However, with more than 60 MLAs out of 76 legislators showing their support for Sidhu, it drops enough hints about how the scales are tilted in whose favour.
