Strawberry Moon 2022: When and where to watch rare natural phenomenon

People around the world are going to witness the full moon of June, known as Strawberry Moon today.

New Delhi: People around the world are going to witness the full moon of June, known as Strawberry Moon today. This also will be a ‘supermoon’ as the moon will be at the closest point in its orbit around the Earth. It is also called perigee.

The rare phenomenon will occur at 7:51 AM Eastern Daylight Time (5:22 PM IST). If the clouds do not cover the sky in your area, you will see the moon brighter and larger than the normal days.

Why do we call it a Strawberry Moon?

Notably, the supermoon does not look like a strawberry, neither it is pink in colour. However, the name of this rare natural phenomenon was given by native American tribes. It is reported that the name has been used by Ojibwe, Dakota, Algonquin, and Lakota peoples, among others, to mark the ripening of ‘June-bearing’ strawberries that are ready to be gathered.

During the phenomenon, the moon will come about 16,000 miles closer to the Earth than its average distance. It would also be about 10% more bright in comparison to the regular full moon.

Lowest moon of the year

This is going to be the lowest full moon of the year 2022, according to space.com. NASA said the moon will only rise just 23.3 degrees above the horizon because the event is coming just ahead of the summer solstice on June 21.

A free live stream of the Strawberry moon will be telecasted by the Virtual Telescope Project in Italy’s Ceccano. It will start at 12:45 AM IST.
