Sudden spike in sale of flavoured condoms in West Bengal’s Durgapur, here is the reason

New Delhi: Instead of using condoms as a contraceptive, students residing in and around Durgapur region of West Bengal are becoming addicted to flavoured condoms for intoxication.
Wondering how is this possible? Well, the students are said to soak the condoms in hot water for several hours and then consume it. The liquid is resulting in keeping them ‘high’ for over 10 to 12 hours.
Condom sales skyrocketed
According to a news report by News 18, a sudden spike in the sale of flavoured condoms has been recorded in past sometime in various parts of Durgapur area in the state.
The regions that have recorded the increase in demand for particular contraceptives include Bidhannagar, Durgapur City Center, Muchipara, and Benachiti.
“Earlier three to four packets of condoms were sold per day. But now packs of condoms are disappearing from the store on daily basis”, a local medical shop owner told.
What’s making students addicted?
Nurul Haque, chemistry teacher at RE College Model School in Durgapur explains, “Soaking condoms in hot water for a long time breaks down large organic molecules and creates alcohol compounds. This compound is keeping the youth intoxicated”.
Though, an official statement from the state police is yet to come, Dhiman Mandal, Superintendent of Durgapur sub-district hospital, told Banglahunt, “There is some kind of aromatic compound in the condom. Alcohol is produced by breaking it down. This aromatic compound is also found in dendrites. So many are seen to be intoxicated with dendrites”.
