Supreme Court orders pay hike for judicial officers across the nation, arrears also cleared

The Court has proposed that the Centre and the State Governments shall pay arrears to the judicial officers from 1/1/2016 partly in cash and partly in fund.

New Delhi: The Hon’ble bench of the Supreme Court of India comprising of Hon’ble The Chief Justice, Hon’ble Mr. Justice Krishna Murari And Hon’ble Ms. Justice Hima Kohli on 27/07/2022 All India Judges Association v. Union of India Writ Petition (Civil) No. 643/2015 has accepted and approved the recommendation of Second National Judicial Pay Commission on revised pay scale for judicial officers across the nation. The Court has proposed that the Centre and the State Governments shall pay arrears to the judicial officers from 1/1/2016 partly in cash and partly in fund.

Senior Advocate Gourab Banerji pointed out that in this way the payment may not reach the hands of the young and retired officers and requested for payment of arrears in cash. The Hon. Court accepted the submission and directed Central and State Governments to pay 25% of arrears immediately, 25% within 3 months and remaining 50% before June 2023.

All India Judges’ Association ,the Petitioner in the matter was led by Senior Advocate Gourab Banerji, Ms. Mayuri Raghuvanshi, Advocate-on-record and Vyom Raghuvanshi, Advocate. 250000 Judges across the Country who were waiting for revision of their pay since 2016 are happy because of this pronouncement and hope that rest of recommendations regarding allowances are also accepted soon.

Besides this the All India Judges Association in WP 643 of 2015 sought several other relief to restructure District Judiciary to raise the quality of dispensation of Justice by the judges.

The Judges and the Country will hope for early hearing of these issues.
