New Delhi: Yakub Memon, the terrorist convicted for series of bomb blasts in Mumbai (1993) was buried in a South Mumbai graveyard, however, big revelation on his grave has sparked political face-off in Maharashtra.

Terrorist Yakub Memon’s grave has been beautified & modified into a mazaar, as marble slabs and LED lights were reportedly put around his grave, with approval of civic authorities.

BJP leader Ram Kadam took the opportunity to tear into the then Uddhav government and demanded resignations of Pawar & Rahul Gandhi for their appeasement politics.

He also shared the before & after pictures of the ‘grave turned mazaar’ to show how the terrorist was glorified during the Uddhav regime.

“Grave of terrorist Yakub Memon, who executed 1993 Bombay bombings at Pakistan’s behest, was converted into a mazar when Uddhav Thackeray was the chief minister. Is this his love for Mumbai, patriotism?,” asked BJP MLA Ram Kadam.

When the Qabaristan authorities were questioned, they refrained from giving direct answers, rather said that this was a general drive for whole of premises and no special treatment was given to Yakub Memon’s grave.

The chairman of Juma Masjid accepted that the grave had been decorated but also noted that no special permission was given for Yakub’s grave to do so. Notably, the Bada Kabrastan site, where Yakub is buried in Mumbai, comes under the jurisdiction of the Burial Waqf Board.

Who was Yakub Memon? When was he buried?

Yakub Memon was one of the dread terrorists to have conducted 1993 serial bomb blasts in Mumbai. He was convicted for the grave crime and sentenced to death. In 2015, the death sentence was carried out as his mercy petition got rejected.

He was buried on July 30, 2015, at Bada Qabaristan in South Mumbai. He was the only convict to be awarded the death penalty for Mumbai riots.
