‘Transitioned from democracy to autocracy…’: CM Arvind Kejriwal, 8 opposition leaders write to PM Modi over Manish Sisodia’s arrest

The letter calls out the alleged ‘misuse’ of central agencies against the opposition and the leaders also accused the nation has transitioned from democracy to autocracy.

New Delhi: Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal and eight other opposition leaders have written a letter to PM Narendra Modi over the arrest of Delhi Deputy CM Manish Sisodia. The letter calls out the alleged ‘misuse’ of central agencies against the opposition and the leaders also accused the nation has transitioned from democracy to autocracy.

The letter called Manish Sisodia’s arrest ‘baseless’ and ‘political conspiracy’ and said that India’s democratic values are threatened by the ‘authoritarian BJP regime’. The opposition parties also alleged that the probe against leaders who join BJP slow down and cited the examples of Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma in the Saradha chit fund case and Suvendu Adhikari and Mukul Roy in the Narada sting operation.

The letter also called out that the timing of the cases on opposition leaders coincided with elections, which indicates that these investigations are ‘politically motivated’. The opposition also cornered the Centre on the matters of Hindenburg Research’s report on Adani Group and ‘war against federalism’ by using Governors and LGs to hinder the governance in states.

Manish Sisodia was arrested on February 26 in the Delhi Excise Policy case and is currently on CBI remand. The court, yesterday, extended the remand for two days as CBI argued that Sisodia is not cooperating in questioning. The hearing for his bail plea will take place on March 10.
