New Delhi: Uttar Pradesh Court sentences Gangster Atiq Ahmed to life imprisonment in the Umesh Pal kidnapping case and also imposed a fine of Rs 5,000 on him.

The Court today convicted mafia-turned-politician Atiq Ahmed and three others in the Umesh Pal kidnapping case.

Other seven accused, including the brother of Atiq Ahmed – Ashraf have been acquitted.

Mafia-turned-politician is an accused in the 2005 murder case of BSP MLA Raju Pal. This year on February 24, Umesh Pal, who was the prime witness in the Raju Pal murder case, was shot dead in Prayagraj.

He is also the main accused in the Umesh Pal murder case.

The verdict was reserved by the court on March 17 after the completion of the hearing.

Umesh Pal, who was the main witness in the Raju Pal murder case was abducted on February 28, 2006, from a Land Cruiser vehicle near Phansi Imli.

On March 1, 2006, Ahmed made Umesh Pal give a written statement in his favor, that he was not present at the crime scene and he did not want to testify.

A year later, in July 2007, Umesh Pal filed a  kidnapping case at Dhumanganj police station after the formation of the BSP government in Uttar Pradesh.

A case was registered against former MPs Atiq Ahmed, Dinesh Pasi, Ansar Ahmed alias Ansar Baba, Ashraf, and Khan Soulat Hanif.

Police had named Atiq Ahmed, Abid Pradhan, Saulat Hanif, Ashraf Dinesh Pasi, Israr, Ashiq Malli, Ansar Ahmed, Javed, Farhan and Ejaz Akhtar as accused.
