UP: Mother and Daughter die in anti-encroachment drive, Police say “they set themselves on fire”

Superintendent of Police (SP) BBGTS Murthy, said, the victim woman and her daughter locked themselves inside the hut and set it on fire which led to their death.

New Delhi: In a shocking incident, a 45-year-old woman and her teenage daughter died in a fire during an anti-encroachment drive at a village in Uttar Pradesh’s Kanpur Dehat district.

The incident is said to have taken place on Monday in Madauli village in the Rura area of the district. The incident happened when the police, district administration and revenue officials were present there to remove encroachments from a gram samaj or government land, said the police official.

According to the villagers, the officials had arrived with a bulldozer without any prior notice.

Shivam Dixit said the fire started when people were still inside.

However, the Police said that the victim Pramila Dixit and her daughter Neha set themselves on fire.

Police said Gendan Lal, Rura Station House Officer (SHO) Dinesh Gautam and Pramila’s husband also sustained burn injuries while trying to save the women.

Police said they are investigating the matter and the guilty will not be spared.

Meanwhile, tension prevails in the village following this incident.

The villagers are also demanding FIR against the Sub-Divisional Magistrate (Maitha) Gyaneshwar Prasad, Lekhpal Singh and others for the alleged murder.
