Uttarakhand: Dhami keeps poll promise on UCC, expert panel to be formed

New Delhi: In the first cabinet meet of Uttarakhand government, Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami on Thursday announced the roadmap for implementation of Uniform Civil Code (UCC) and said that a committee of experts will be formed at the earliest for the same.

In the last lap of election campaign, the incumbent CM had promised that if BJP returns to power, UCC will be implemented in the state. Today, keeping his promise, the second time Chief Minister declared his cabinet’s decision towards its implementation.

The Uniform Civil Code has been one of the major poll plans of BJP over past few decades. The party has been a strong votary of a ‘common law for all’ and its MPs have also listed Private Member Bill on this, advocating for its implementation.

Uttarakhand to be 1st state to implement UCC?

Addressing the media after first state cabinet meeting, CM Dhami said, “The state cabinet unanimously approved that a committee (of experts) will be constituted at the earliest and it will be implemented in the state. This will be the first state to do so.”

Dhami and his cabinet was sworn in as Uttarakhand Chief Minister for the second term on Wednesday.

What is Uniform Civil Code (UCC)?

The UCC calls for formulation of ‘one country, one law’ and its uniform implementation across the length & breath of country. The UCC pitches for uniform law across all religions & communities in matter relating to marriage, divorce, inheritance, adoption and others.

Presently, the different communities are guided by different laws. For adherents of different religions, there are different religions like Hindu Marriage Act, Hindu Succession Act, Christian Marriages Act, Parsi Marriage and Divorce Act. For Muslims, the laws are not codified and are based on their religious texts.
