
New Delhi: NDPP’s Hekani Jakhalu made history by becoming the first woman from Nagaland to become MLA after being elected to the 60-member Nagaland Assembly.
She won from the Dimapur-III constituency in the Nagaland 2023 Assembly elections.
Hekani Jakhalu, a 48-year-old, lawyer-activist was among the four women of the total 183 candidates who contested in the 2023 Nagaland assembly elections.
She defeated Azheto Zhimomi of LJP by a huge margin.
In Nagaland, the NDPP-BJP alliance is set to form Government in the state.
Who is Hekani Jakhalu?
Hekani Jakhalu, is known for setting up a non-governmental organization YouthNet Nagaland which aims to help the youth of the state to pursue business opportunities.
In 2018, she won the Nari Shakti Puraskar award.
In 2023, Hekani Jakhalu, along with Salhoutuonuo Kruse from Nagaland became the first woman to be elected to the Nagaland Legislative Assembly.
Jakhalu returned to Delhi and started her career as a lawyer only after working in the United States.
She was born in Nagaland’s Dimapur. She has done her education at Bishop Cotton Girls’ School in Bengaluru. From Delhi’s Lady Shri Ram College, she had earned a bachelor’s degree in political science.
Hekani Jakhalu then did a Bachelor of Laws at the University of Delhi and pursued her Marsters from the University of San Francisco
