While Joyita is the first transgender judge in the country, there is more to the personality. Mondal has grown up with the Hijra community in North Dinajpur and had to beg on roads for livelihood. She dropped out of school after being bullied by boys. Soon, she started working as a social activist in Dinajpur and side-by-side completed her education. She got herself a degree in law and in 2010, she became the first transgender person from her district to get a voter ID.

She started an NGO called Dinajpur Notun Alo Society to work for the rights of transgender people in the country. In the landmark judgement in 2014, Supreme Court finally gave recognition to transgender people as the third gender. In July 2018, Joyita was appointed as the judge of a Lok Adalat (civil court).

From leaving her house and sleeping on bus stands, to becoming a judge has been an inspiring journey, not only for the transgender community but for the nation.
