New Delhi: President Droupadi Murmu appointed retired judge of Supreme Court Justice Abdul Nazeer as the third Governor of Andhra Pradesh.

The notification was released on Sunday.

Who is Abdul Nazeer?

Former judge of the Supreme Court of India, Syed Abdul Nazeer retired on January 4, 2023. He is succeeding Biswa Bhusan Harichandan, he has been transferred to Chhattisgarh as the governor of the state.

He was part of many landmark judgments including the Ayodhya-Babri Masjid dispute case, the Triple Talaq case, demonetisation case, and a judgment that held that the right to privacy is a fundamental right.

Justice Nazeer was also the only Muslim Judge on the Constitution Bench who was part of the controversial Ayodhya land dispute and had agreed to pronounce a unanimous verdict, which demonstrated his commitment to secularism.

During his farewell function on January 4, Justice Nazeer said that in the judiciary the representation of women is still very low.

Justice Nazeer was born on January 5, 1958.  On February 18, 1983, he enrolled himself as an advocate. After practicing before the Karnataka High Court he was appointed as an additional Judge of the High Court on May 12, 2003.
