New Delhi: With Raksha Bandhan festivities taking over the entire country, it is time for the yearly ritual of Pakistan’s Qamar Mohsin Sheikh to tie the sacred thread of protection around the wrist of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
According to news reports, Qamar visited the national capital on the 19th of August and celebrated the festival with his brother, a three-decade-long tradition. Interestingly, each year Qamar has gifted Prime Minister Modi with rakhis made by herself. Speaking about the self-made rakhis, Sheikh told the ANI, “I don’t buy rakhi from the market for my brother. I make several rakhis myself before Raksha Bandhan and select the one I like the most to tie on his wrist.”

However, during the Covid-19 pandemic, Qamar was not able to send her brother the rakhi. Sheikh had sent the Rakhi to PM Modi using the post.
Who is Qamar Mohsin Sheikh?
Qamar was born into a Muslim family in the bustling town of Karachi. Later on, she married Mohsin Sheikh in 1981 and shifted to Ahmedabad. It was here that she had met the Prime Minister when the latter was still working in the RSS.
According to a report of India Today, Qamar was introduced to PM Modi for the first time in 1990 when the latter was with Dr Swaroop Singh. Singh was the then Governor of Gujarat. There is an anecdotal tale behind the ‘brother-sister’ tale of PM Modi and Qamar Sheikh. Swaroop Singh had introduced Qamar as his daughter. In response, PM Modi retorted with a grin, “That would make her my sister.”

Since then, this unbreakable bond has stayed true over the last 3 decades. A sister always wishes the best for her brother. Similarly, Qamar has wished that one day Narendra Modi would become the Prime Minister and Chief Minister. It seems the gods have granted her wishes as Mr Modi has become both the Chief Minister as well as the Prime Minister.
