New Delhi: World famous author Salman Rushdie was stabbed in the neck when he was attending an event in New York, US, on Friday. The man who attacked the 75-year-old writer has been detained and sent into custody. The incident happened at the Chautauqua Institution, located in a rural part of the city. It is reported the writing of the author in the past led to threats.

According to the media reports, the author has been rushed to an area hospital by helicopter. In the attack, the moderator of the talk also received some head injuries. Following the attack, the event was cancelled and the audience was safely evacuated.

However, this was not an unknown place for Rushdie as he earlier spoke at the same venue many times.

Who is Salman Rushdie?

Salman Rushdie was born on June 19, 1947, in Bombay, British India. He is the alma mater of King’s College and Cambridge. He married four times in his life. The first time, he tied the knot with Clarissa Luard in 1976. In 2007, he divorced her fourth wife Padma Lakshmi.

In India, he is famous for his book Midnight’s Children which was released in the year 1981. He is currently a British citizen of Indin origin. He also lived in the US for the past 20 years.

He has been in controversy for many years for his fourth book, The Satanic Verses (1988). It is reported the book is banned in Iran since 1988, allegedly for the blasphemous content against Islam. However, he has been continuously producing books, including non-fiction.
