New Delhi: BJP leader and actor Sonali Phogat died of a heart attack in Goa at the age of 42. She was in Goa with some of her staff members when she suffered an untimely demise. Sonali was born on 21 September 1979 in Bhuthan village of Fatehabad, Harayana. She is known to be from a farming background and has a brother and three sisters. She was married to Sanjay Phogat and has a daughter named Yashodhra Phogat. In 2016, her husband was found dead in mysterious circumstances in their farmhouse in Dhandhoor village, around 10 km from Hisar.

Career

Her career in the entertainment industry began with anchoring a show on Doordarshan. She made her daily soap debut in 2016 with ‘Ek Maa Jo Laakhon Ke Liye Bani Amma’. She was also seen in a Haryanvi feature film ‘Chhoriyan Chharon Se Kam Nahi Hoti’. In 2019, the actor was a part of the web series ‘The Story of Badmashgarh’. Besides these, she is popular as a content creator on social media and has been part of music videos for various Haryanvi and Punjabi songs. The actor has also been part of the ‘Bigg Boss’.

Her political career began with BJP in 2008. She became the Vice President of the party’s Mahila Morcha and has also been in charge of the tribal wing of the party. She contested the 2019 Haryana Assembly elections from Adampur, where she lost to Congress leader Kuldeep Bishnoi.

What was ‘Bharat Mata Ki Jai’ controversy?

In 2019, a video of her went viral where she said ‘Shame on people who cannot say Bharat Mata Ki Jai,’ and also referred to them belonging to Pakistan. In another viral video, she was seen beating a market secretary with her slipper in the presence of Haryana police and even using cuss words. In her statement to the police, she said that the man first used abusive words that led to her actions.
