New Delhi: Will separatist leader Yasin Malik get death sentence? Will he get life term or will get some leniency in the quantum of punishment to be announced today? These are the big questions ahead of his sentencing in the Unlawful Activities Prevention Act (UAPA) at 3.30 PM.

The National Investigation Agency has demanded the death penalty for the Kashmir separatist leader. The defence has asked for life imprisonment instead of death penalty.

Arguments have been completed in the case and the Special Judge Praveen Singh had on May 19 convicted Yasin Malik. A Delhi court will pronounce verdict on the quantum of punishment in the case at 3:30 PM.

The separatist leader has already pleaded guilty to all charges made against him including those under the stringent Unlawful Activities Prevention Act (UAPA), in terror funding case.

Yasin & his outfit Jammu & Kashmir Liberation Front (JKLF) has been accused of funding secessionist groups for terror activities in the valley. His terror funding apparently led to incidents of stone pelting on security forces, damaging public property and waging war against India.

Meanwhile, Srinagar has been closed down ahead of court verdict. Paramilitary forces & police have been deployed in full strength in the city as Patiala court gets ready to announce the quantum of punishment for convicted JKLF leader Yasin Malik.

Yasin Malik faces a maximum punishment of death penalty while the minimum sentence in the case is life imprisonment, reports said.

Though no group has given a call for shutdown but the decision was taken as a precautionary measure to keep the situation under check. Shops & commercial establishments remain closed but the transport is running smoothly.
