New Delhi: Emoticons or emojis in the digital era have emerged crucial part of expressing thoughts through charming digital characters. Just when words fail to convey our feeling to our loved ones, emojis come to the rescue.
Emojis are also popularly called pictograms, logograms, ideograms, and smileys. The emergency of emojis first happened in 1982 when computer scientist Scott Fahlmamn introduced the graphic method of text communication with symbols like 🙂 and 🙁 to replace language.
With emojis becoming popular over the years, iOS, Android, and WhatsApp started rolling out new characters, making changes to their current emojis. Hardly any people don’t use emojis to express their feelings and thoughts.
Every year on July 17, World Emoji Day is celebrated. The day belongs to Jeremy Burge, the inventor of Emojipedia, an emoji reference website that lists the meaning and use of all emojis. Besides, in 1999, Shigetaka Kurita, a Japanese programmer, invented emojis to enable pagers in his nation to transmit and receive heart-shaped emoticons. This has led to the creation of the Unicode Consortium which developed universal standards for characters, including emoji across all software systems. Frequency developed as one of the important criteria in whether emoticons are cut.
Thus to celebrate World Emoji Day, take a look at the most common emojis used by the people:
