Amit Mishra takes a dig at the captaincy duties after the Zimbabwe Tour

Amit Mishra takes a dig at the decision of handing over the captaincy to Shubman Gill for the recently concluded tour of Zimbabwe.

New Delhi: Former Indian leg-spinner Amit Mishra has come out in the open to hit on the decision to give captaincy duties to Shubman Gill. The chatter started when in a recent podcast where Mishra was asked a ton of questions ranging from the Sanjeev Goenka-KL Rahul incidents to Kohli-Gambhir equations.

Towards the concluding parts of the podcast, the former Indian leggie commented on a rather controversial take on the entire Tour to Zimbabwe. Amit was found quoting, “Mai Shubman ko captain nahi banaunga, kyonki maine usey IPL me dekha, he doesn’t know ki captaincy kaise karna hai, uske paas captaincy ka idea hi nahi hai.”

Mishra said that Gill’s consistent chance in the Indian team and even regular performances in the national jersey do not guarantee him a shot at captaincy. When given the captain’s armband for Gujarat Titans at the IPL, Mishra reckons Gill was very poor and lacked the tactical insight that is necessary for any captain.

Who are Mishra’s top picks for captaincy?

After hurling out a stream of criticism for Gill’s captaincy, Amit was asked the million-dollar question if not Gill which player would Mishra like to lead in the T20Is?

Mishra reckons that Sanju Samson, Rishab Pant and Ruturaj Gaikwad are some of the interesting prospects that India has to choose from. Pant missed the Zimbabwe tour while Samson joined from the second match. However, Ruturaj has been out there with the side from the first match itself occasionally dropping good and promising performances.

Mishra had a word or two for the young CSK batsman Ruturaj Gaikwad, “He is a good option, should be kept with the team, the way Yashasvi Jaiswal was with the Indian side at the T20 World Cup.”
