New Delhi: The 200 m dash national record holder, Amlan Borgohain has set a new national record in the 100 m category. He clocked 10.25 seconds to cover the distance. He was playing at the Inter-Railway Athletics Championships in Rae Bareli, Uttar Pradesh.
Improving on his previous best of 10.34 seconds, Amlan broke Amiya Kumar Malick’s record of 10.26 seconds, which was created in 2016. Earlier this year, at the Federation Cup, Amlan made the new 200 m record by clocking 20.52 seconds. This record made him the fastest Indian sprinter.
In an interview earlier, the Assamese sprinter told that he used to play football, but his mother asked him to shift as he was getting injured too often. He made a decision to pick sprinting on track and later went on to become the fastest Indian ever. The 24-year-old athlete is targeting the Nationals and Open Nationals coming ahead.
His personal coach James Hillier says that he has made this improvement due to the work put in over the past three months to improve his running posture and maintain it when he gets tired. Seeing him in the training, Hillier knew that he could break the record, but did not say anything in order to not jinx it. Hillier trains Amlan at the Odisha Reliance Foundation High-Performance Centre in Bhubaneshwar.
The Northeast Frontier Railways tweeted and informed about the accomplishment in the 87th AIR Athletics Championship. After all the paperwork is completed, the Athletics Federation of India will be ratifying the record.
The greatness of his achievement can be known by the fact that this timing of 10.25 seconds could have aided him to enter the 100 m sprinting semi-finals in the Birmingham games. With Amlan improving consistently, India may participate in top international events in Men’s 100 m category.
