Sri Lanka is trying to come out of a deep political and economic crisis, while the cricket team stood up and gave a moment of joy to the cricket fans back at home. The hosts are getting appreciation from all over the world and one such was by the 2011 World Cup winner Gautam Gambhir.

While everybody ruled Sri Lanka out after the first game against Pakistan, Dasun Shanaka’s men stood up and created an example in the history of cricket. In the game, Sri Lanka did not have a good start as their star batters Kusal Mendis and Pathum Nissanka were back in the pavilion by the fourth over. Dhananjaya de Silva, who was replacing Charith Asalanka, could manage 28(21) and soon the batting collapsed to 58/5 in 8.5 overs. It was Bhanuka Rajapaksa who posted a 58-run stand with Wanindu Hasaranga. Hasaranga scored 36 off 21 while Rajapaksa fire-powered 71* off 45 balls to lead Sri Lanka to a total of 170/6.

In the bowling department, Pramod Madushan was on fire as he dismissed Babar Azam and Fakhar Zaman in the fourth over. Mohammad Rizwan and Iftikhar Ahmed built a 71-run partnership in the next 9.5 overs. Madushan struck again with a slower one to dismiss Ahmed for 32(31). Hasaranga brought the game into Sri Lanka’s hands by taking three wickets in an over while Pakistan was left 112/7. It was then just a matter of time and skill as Sri Lanka picked the cup.
