Asian Games 2023: India records best ever performance with 81 medals, Neeraj Chopra clinches gold

India won a total of 12 medals on day 11, including 3 golds, taking their tally of total numbers of medals to 81.

New Delhi: India enjoyed a day filled with milestones on Wednesday, October 4, at the Asian Games 2023.

India broke their all-time medal record as well as all-time gold medal record won at a single edition of the Asian Games.

India set the record in the 2018 Jakarta Asian Games, where they won a total of 70 medals, including, 16 golds. However, India has already won 81 medals, including 18 golds, by the end of day 11, of the 2023 Asian Games in Hangzhou, China.

With four more days still to go, the Indian contingent will be looking to get the magical figures of 100 overall medals this season.

18:10: Golden run continues

Indian athletes continue their dominant show as the men’s 4X100 relay team of ย Anas Muhammed Yahiya, Amoj Jacob, Muhammed Ajmal Variyathodi, and Rajesh Ramesh clinches gold to give India their 18th gold medal at the 2023, Asian Games.

18:01: Double success in javelin throw

India’s golden boy, Neeraj Chopra, keeping aside the initial controversy, clinched the gold and defended his title with an 88.88m throw in his fourth attempt.

India’s Kishore Kumar Jena secured the silver medal.

17:49: India gets one more medal from athleticsย 

Indian women’s 4×100 relay race team of Vithya Ramraj, Aishwarya Mishra, Prachi and Subha Venkatesan clinches silver and gives India one more medal from athletics.

17:24: Medal alert

Indian sprinter Avinash Sable clinches silver in the men’s 5000m race, taking the Indian medal tally to 77.

17:14: Javelin update (Men’s)

India’s Neeraj Chopra and Kishore Kumar stand at one and two positions, respectively, after the first attempt.

Neeraj gets 84.49 on his second attempt. Meanwhile, Kishore gets 79.76.

16:58: Athletics take the charge

India’s Harmilan Bains bags silver in the women’s 800m race, giving India their 76th medal.

16:40: Neeraj Chopra event halted due to technical fault

Neeraj took a perfect first throw but was not registered due to a technical fault.

16:47: First medal from wrestling

Indian wrestler Sunil Kumar clinches the bronze medal in the men’s Greco-Roman 87 kg event after defeating Kyrgyzstan’s Atabek in the bronze medal match.

16:11: Another ticket to the finals

Indian squash star Saurav Ghosal has ensured yet another big medal for India after reaching the finals of squash men’s singles finals after defeating Hong Kong’s Hin Henry by 3-0, in the semifinals.

15:02: Next stop, “The Finals.”


Indian men’s hockey team defeated South Korea by 5-3 in the semifinals, sealing their spot in the finals of the Asian Games 2023, and confirming at least a silver medal.

India will now play in the finals on Friday, October 6.

14:30: Into the semis

The Indian women’s kabaddi team defeated Thailand in their last group-stage match by 54-22 and sealed their spot in the semifinals.

14:05: Badminton update (Men’s doubles)

The Indian duo of Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty qualifies for the men’s doubles quarterfinals after defeating Indonesiaโ€™s Leo Rolly Carnando and Daniel Marthin in the round of 16.

13:30: Lovlina wins silver

Indian boxer Lovlina Borgohain clinches in women’s clinches silver in the women’s 75 Kg category, taking the Indian medal tally to 74.

11:58: PM Modi greets athletes for historic show at Asian Games

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi also congratulated the Indian contingent on their record-breaking run in the Asian Games 2023.

11:43: Another bronze medal secured

Indian boxer Parveen Hooda secured a bronze medal in the women’s 57 Kg category after losing out against Chinese Taipei’s Yu-Ting Lin in the semifinals.

11:14: Third medal of the day

Indian squash duo of Anahat Singh and Abhay Singh secured a bronze medal in the mixed doubles event.

Anahat and Abhay lost in the semifinals to theย  Malaysian duo of Aifa Binti Azman and Mohammad Syafiq Bin Mohd Kamal by 1-2, and lost a chance to set up an all-Indian finals against Dipika Pallikal Karthik and Harinder Pal Singh.

9:47: Bronze medal match set

Indian wrestler Sunil Kumar loses out to ย Iranโ€™s Naser Alizadeh in the menโ€™s 87kg Greco-Roman semifinal. However, he will still fight for the bronze medal.

Sunil will play his bronze medal match at 14:30 Hrs IST, later today.

8:46: Record broken

Indian archery duo of Jyothi Surekha Vennam and Ojas Pravin Deotale clinched gold in the compound mixed team archery event after defeating Koreaโ€™s So Chaewon and Joo Jaehoon in the finals.

With this, India has broken the number of medals record of 70 medals at the Asian Games, set at the 2018, Jakarta Asian Games, and has also equalled the record of most number of gold medals won, i.e. 16 gold medals.

8:30: Badminton update

Indian shuttlers PV Sindhu and HS Pronoy qualified for the quarterfinals of the singles women’s and men’s divisions after winning their round of 16 matches, respectively.

7:45: First medal of the day

Indian sprinting duo of Ram Baboo and Manju Rani clinched a bronze medal in the 35 km Race Walk Mixed Team event, equalling India’s best-ever medals record at the Asian Games of 70 medals.

6:53: Domination continues

Indian men’s kabaddi continued their dominant run as they defeated Thailand by 63-26 in their second ‘Group A’ match.
