BBL 13: Smith and Dwarshuis stars as Sydney Sixers starts their campaign with a win

Will Sutherland’s all-round show went in vain as his team fell short by 8 runs.

New Delhi: In the second match of the Big Bash League season 13, Sydney Sixers defeated the Melbourne Renegades, in a close encounter by 8 runs, to start off their campaign in winning fashion.

Sixers took on the Renegades in the second match of the season at their home ground of Sydney Cricket Ground in Sydney.

Renegades skipper Nic Maddison won the toss and invited the Sixers to bat first in the match.

First innings

The Sixers got a good start, as with the help of Josh Philips (29), they added 58 runs for the first wicket.

Renegades, however, made a good comeback by taking two quick wickets, but Steve Smith (61), along with skipper Moises Henriques (40), added 69 runs for the third wicket.

Jordan Silk (26*), played a fiery cameo in the end to finish the innings with 175 for 6 in 20 overs.

Adam Zampa and Will Sutherland were the most successful bowlers for the Renegades, with two wickets each. Kane Richardson also took one wicket for himself.

The chase

The chase was not comfortable for the Renegades as they lost Nic Maddison (6), Joe Clarke (6) and Jordan Cox (0), very cheaply reducing themselves to 39 for 3.

Jake Fraser (48) and Aron Finch (33), who tried to revive the chase, were also removed after getting a good start.

Will Sutherland, after performing exceptionally well with the ball, was once again in the middle to finish the job with the bat, but despite his not-out 51 runs innings, Renegades only managed to reach 167 for 7 in 20 overs, giving the Sixers a close eight runs win.

Ben Dwarshuis was the most successful bowler for the Sixers, with an impressive spell of 3 for 36 in 4 overs. Sean Abbott, Jack Bird and Steve OKeefe also took one wicket each.
