Commonwealth Games 2022: After Nitu, Hussamuddin confirm two medals, India has 3 more boxing QF to go

Tokyo Olympic bronze medallist Lovlina Borgohain will also be playing her quarterfinal bout.

New Delhi: Nitu Ghanghas and Hussamuddin have won their quarterfinals bout and advanced to the semi-finals. Qualifying for semi-finals in boxing confirms at least a bronze for the boxer. Indian boxers have multiple quarterfinal bouts on day 6, which also means multiple medal confirmation for India.

Nitu Ghanghas played in the women’s 48 kg category and won her bout after two rounds only. She was declared the winner with abandonment (ABD) and became the first Indian boxer to confirm a medal in the Commonwealth Games 2022. On the other hand, Hussamuddin played his bout against Namibia’s T Ndevelo and won by points. It was a close bout as the first two rounds went in Hussamuddin’s favour with a split decision. He played well in the second and the third round and landed some hooks to win the bout with a split decision of 4-1.

Tokyo Olympic bronze medallist Lovlina Borgohain will also be playing her quarterfinal bout. She will face Wales’ Rosie Eccles, who can give fight to Lovlina. With her personal coach by her side, Lovlina seems to be unstoppable at the moment, and India will have a lot of hopes from her. Another star boxer Nikhat Zareen, who is also the reigning world champion, will play her quarterfinal bout against Helen Jones in the 48-50 kg category. Ashish Kumar will play his quarterfinal match against Aaron Brown in the Men’s 80 kg category.

With two medals already confirmed, there are three more bouts to go. Nikhat Zareen will play at 11:15 am IST, Lovlina Borgoahin will play at 12:45 am IST while Ashish Kumar will box at 2:00 am IST on day 6 of the Birmingham Games. The bouts will be streaming on Sony Sports Network and Sony Liv.
