Commonwealth Games 2022: Check out 5 medal contenders for India on day 6

With Boxers Nitu, Lovlina Borgohain, Hussamuddin, Ashish Kumar and World Champion Nikhat Zareen will play in their quarterfinal bouts, day 6 has a lot of action to watch out for.

New Delhi: On day 6 of the Commonwealth Games 2022, Indian athletes will play in eight medals events and have chances to win 11 medals. With Boxers Nitu, Lovlina Borgohain, Hussamuddin, Ashish Kumar and World Champion Nikhat Zareen will play in their quarterfinal bouts, day 6 has a lot of action to watch out for. A win in the quarterfinals will ensure at least a bronze medal for the boxers.

From weightlifting to athletics, there are 11 Indian athletes competing to lay hands on medals while many are playing to confirm a medal for the nation. Here is a list of 5 athletes who have a chance to win a medal for India on day 6:

1. Lovepreet Singh

Lovepreet won a silver medal in the last Commonwealth Weightlifting Championships in the men’s 109 kg category. With eight medals in weightlifting for India, Lovepreet will look for a podium finish on day 6. He will be seen in action at 2:00 pm IST.

2. Purnima Pandey

Purnima stood 6th in the Gold Coast games in the women’s 90+ kg category. She is looking in better shape with fine chances to clinch a medal this time. Purnima qualified for the Birmingham games after winning gold in Commonwealth Weightlifting Championships 2021 and has a chance to win a gold in Birmingham too. She will play in the women’s 87+ kg category at 6:30 pm IST.

3. Sourav Ghosal

India’s ace squash player Sourav Ghosal will play for the bronze medal against the 2018 CWG gold medal winner James Willstrop. It will be a tough match for Sourav, but as compared to last time, he looks more prepared in Birmingham.

Sourav has also won a silver medal in the Mixed Doubles category in the Gold Coast games and will look to win his second Commonwealth Games medal.

4. Aneesh Kumar

Aneesh Kumar is the gold medal winner in the 2019 CISM World Military Games. He will be playing the Men’s Discus Throw F42 in the para-athletics on day 6. Along with him Devender Kumar and Devendra Gehlot will also look out to win a medal for the nation.

The discus throwers will be in action at 1:15 am IST.

5. Gurdeep Singh

Another Indian weightlifter who has a chance to win a medal. In the last Commonwealth Games, he finished in the fourth position, this time he looks strong enough to finish on the podium.

He will be lifting weights at 11:00 pm IST.
