Commonwealth Games 2022: Meet ‘Beckham’ & ‘Ronaldo’, the cyclists who will race for India

India hasn’t won any medal in the cycling yet and both of them have brightened the Indian chances as they enter the game in good form. In 2018, 9 cyclists had participated for India but none won a medal.

New Delhi: David Beckham & Ronaldo Singh… their names may sound strange but they are the young professional cyclists who will spearhead India’s cycling challenge at the Commonwealth Games 2022.

It’s on their shoulders lies India’s hopes of winning a medal in the cycling championship. The duo became popular not just because of their unique names but also their spectacular feats in previous championships.

It may be noted that David Beckham & Ronaldo are the two world-famous football players who enjoy immense following even today.

Beckham & Ronaldo, the duo are young Indian talents, offering lots of hope & promise in the cycling category. The Indian contingent has just 2 players, out of 215 athletes, that will vie for medal in the Commonwealth Games 2022 in Birmingham.

Beckham was named after the legendary English footballer by his grandfather as the latter was a big fan of former Manchester United and Real Madrid midfielder. Beckham won the 200-meter cycling event at Guwahati Youth Games in 2022 and hogged the limelight when he was mentioned by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Mann Ki Baat.

Ronaldo recently won the silver medal at Asian Track Cycling Championships in Delhi. He boasts of a national record for running the fastest sprint in 9.946s.

The 20-year old cyclist from Manipur made headlines in 2019 also after he won a gold medal in Junior World Championships, India’s first-ever in the competition.

He has not been named after his namesake but after popular Brazilian footballer Ronaldinho.
