Commonwealth Games 2022: Mirabai Chanu all set to bring home medal on day 2, check when & where to watch

Tokyo Olympics silver medal, 2017 World Championship gold, and 2018 Commonwealth Games gold, these achievements are enough to inform how strong  Mirabai Chanu is when it comes to weightlifting.

New Delhi: Saikhom Mirabai Chanu is all set to bring home a gold medal on the Commonwealth Games Day 2. She will compete in the Women’s 49 kg Weightlifting and is definitely the favourite in the event. She is the defending champion as she won a gold in the 2018 Gold Coast games.

Tokyo Olympics silver medal, 2017 World Championship gold, and 2018 Commonwealth Games gold, these achievements are enough to inform how strong  Mirabai Chanu is when it comes to weightlifting. She faces tough competition from Chinese lifters like Hou, but China not being part of the CWG makes Chanu the favourite to win the gold.

Apart from the last time’s gold, she also holds a silver from the 2014 Glasgow games. Her performance in the Commonwealth Games has been remarkable, and she will look to continue her medal trail. She also holds the world record in clean & jerk which she created in 2021 by lifting 119 kg. In the 2018 games she lifted 86 kg in snatch and 110 kg in Clean and Jerk, she has clearly gone past that performance. It would be interesting to see if she can break her personal best and her world record on day 2.

Other weightlifters competing on day 2 include the 2018 games’ silver medallist Guru Raja who won a silver in men’s 56 kg by lifting 249 kg (111 kg + 138 kg). Sanket Sargar and Bindyarani Devi will also be competing in the Men’s 55kg and Women’s 55 kg respectively.
