Commonwealth Games 2022: Nikhat Zareen advances to quarterfinals after defeating Bagao

After Lovlina Borgohain, Zareen becomes the second Indian boxer to qualify for the quarterfinals in the 2022 Commonwealth Games.

New Delhi: Nikhat Zareen wins her bout against Helena Ismael Bagao with a knockdown as the referee stopped the game in the third round. It was a dominating performance from the world champion in the light flyweight category in the round of 16.

Nikhat won the first round as four judges scored 10-8 and one gave 10-9 in her favour. In the second round, she showed some attacking punches on her opponent’s face and continued to dominate the match. The third round felt like a formality when Helena seemed to be too slow in comparison to Nikhat who was boxing in the red corner. The referee had to eventually stop the game as Nikhat looked too fierce. The game went in the favour of the Indian boxer and now she has moved ahead to the quarterfinals.

After Lovlina Borgohain, Zareen becomes the second Indian boxer to qualify for the quarterfinals in the 2022 Commonwealth Games. She will be playing her next bout on August 3 against Wales boxer Helen Jones.
