Commonwealth Games 2022: Weightlifter Bindyarani Devi sets new CWG record, picks silver medal

She lifted 86 kg in snatch and 116 kg in clean and jerk to win a silver medal in the women’s 55 kg category.

New Delhi: Weightlifter Bindyarani Devi brought home the fourth medal for India. She lifted 86 kg in snatch and 116 kg in clean and jerk to win a silver medal in the women’s 55 kg category. Her 116 kg lift in the clean and jerk round is also the new Commonwealth Games record.

The gold medal in the event was won by Nigeria’s Adijat Oralinoye as she lifted a total of 203 kg (92 kg + 111 kg) and made the new game’s record. Just behind her was Bindyarani with a total of 202 kg. The bronze medal was won by England’s Fraer Morrow with a total lift of 198 kg (89 kg + 109 kg).

In her first lift in the snatch round, Bindyarani Devi 81 kg, she improved her first lift by a margin of 3 kg in her second attempt. In her third attempt, she lifted 86 kg to stand in the third position after the snatch round. It was in the clean and jerk round where she did exceptionally well. In her first attempt, she lifted 110 kg. She could not successfully lift the 114 kg bar on her second attempt. Bindyarani was in the third position and she decided to improve her standing as she went for a 116 kg lift in her third attempt. Not only did she successfully lift the bar, but she also created a new game’s record and won the silver medal.

After Indian lifters Sanket Sargar, Gururaja and Mirabai Chanu won medals in their respective events, Bindyrani was the fourth one to do so. Jeremy, Popy Hazarika and Achinta Shueli will go for medals in weightlifting on day 3.
