Commonwealth Games Day 2: Mirabai Chanu, weightlifting contingent to fight for gold, check full schedule

On day 2 of the Commonwealth Games, India will fight for medals in 12 events across five disciples, namely cycling, weightlifting, swimming, athletics and gymnastics.

New Delhi: With a dominating performance in Table tennis, Badminton and Hockey, India will continue the campaign on Day 2. On day 2 of the Commonwealth Games, India will fight for medals in 12 events across five disciples, namely cycling, weightlifting, swimming, athletics and gymnastics.

Weightlifting will be the sport to look out for as Tokyo Olympic silver medallist Mirabai Chanu will lead the contingent to clash for the podium finish. Indian weightlifters will play in four events, all being medal games. In the 2018 games, India won 9 medals in this discipline, including 5 golds. Two of the nine medallists will be seen in action today.

The will also feature Nitender Rawat running for a medal in the marathon, and Yogeshwar Singh, who qualified for the Men’s All-Round Artistic Gymnastics Finals by finishing 16th. Meanwhile, Indian cyclists will play in the qualification rounds to make it to the finals.

Day 2 will also feature Srihari Nataraj, India’s hero on day 1. He will swim in the Men’s 100 m Backstroke finals as he clocked 54:55 seconds in the semi-finals and was ranked 4th in Heat 2 and 7th overall. He is only the fourth ever Indian swimmer to make it to the finals in Commonwealth Games. Along with him, Kushagra Rawat will also be trying to make a place in the finals of the Men’s 200 m Freestyle.

Among the Indian boxers, Tokyo Olympic’s bronze medallist Lovlina Borgohain will be playing against Ariane Nicholson in the Round of 16, while Sanjeet will be seen in action in the Men’s 92 kg category.
