CWG 2022, Day 4: Who are the medal contenders for India today

While the Indian contingent will be at the fullest of its efforts to finish first at the podium, here is a look at possible medal contenders

New Delhi: India’s quest for gold in the ongoing Commonwealth Games began with Mirabai Chanu in the 47 kg category on day 2 of the international event, and was followed by fantastic lifts by weightlifters Jeremy Lalrinnunga and Achinta Sheuli in the 67kg and 73kg categories respectively.

With a total of six medals in India’s kitty including three yellow medals, the country has its hopes with Day 4 of the tournament held in Birmingham city of England.

While the Indian contingent will be at the fullest of its efforts to finish first at the podium, here is a look at possible medal contenders for India today.

# Ajay Singh

Ajay Singh

The 25-year-old who happens to be a two-time Commonwealth Championships gold medalist is up for the men’s 81kg category in weightlifting on day 4 of the tournament. The latter had directly qualified for CWG 2022 after nabbing gold last year in Tashkent.

# Harjinder Kaur

Harjinder Kaur

Kaur is a strong medal prospect in the women’s 71kg category finals in weightlifting today. She came into spotlight after clinching silver last year at the Commonwealth Weightlifting Championships.

# Suyash Narayan Jadhav and Niranjan Mukundan

Jadhav and Mukundan is an another medal prospects duo as they have their eyes on winning men’s 50m freestyle S7 finals in para swimming today in Birmingham.

Suyash Narayan Jadhav

Niranjan happens to be the only para swimmer to attain over 50 international medals, and holds a total of 60 medals from various tournament throughout his career.

Niranjan Mukundan

On the other hand, Jadhav is the first Indian Para Swimmer to get a ‘A’ qualifying mark for both – Rio Paralympics 2016 and Tokyo Olympics 2020.
