Dane van Niekerk to retire from international cricket, Marizanne Kapp says ‘End of an era’

New Delhi: Former captain of South Africa’s women’s cricket team Dane van Niekerk is set to retire from international cricket. According to a report by ESPNCricinfo will soon announce her retirement from the international arena. While she did not directly announce her retirement, her Instagram post and Marizanne Kapp’s tweet indicated it.

Dane van Niekerk got injured last year and returning from her injury, she was not included in the T20 World Cup squad while Sune Luus was named South Africa’s new captain. South Africa reached the finals of the T20 World Cup for the first time and it sidelined van Niekerk. There was a lot of controversy around it and the decision to retire might be an effect of it.

She played her last international game in September 2021 and when she was set to make a comeback, she was not included in the side as she did not fulfill the fitness requirements.

The South African all-rounder shared a story on Instagram which mentioned some chapters of life not getting closure and losing yourself in trying to fix things. Marizanne Kapp shared pictures with van Niekerk and wrote, “End of an era.”

Dane van Niekerk is currently playing in the Women’s Premier League for RCB. She has not made it to the playing XI yet as only four overseas players are allowed in the XI. In an interview, she said that she is playing in WPL not to prove that she was worthy of playing in the World Cup but to find herself and enjoy cricket.

She has played in 107 ODIs scoring 2175 runs and picking 138 wickets, while she has 1877 runs and 65 wickets in 86 T20Is. The cricketer has also played one Test match back in 2014.
