Ex-Man U star Luis Nani joins Melbourne Victory, big boost for A-League

The A-League has secured one of its biggest foreign players since Alessandro Del Piero.

New Delhi: Former Manchester United star footballer Luis Nani has joined Melbourne Victory on a two-year marquee deal. He will be seen playing in the A-League Men, the highest level professional football league in Australia and New Zealand. The A-League has secured one of its biggest foreign players since Alessandro Del Piero.

The Portuguese footballer has left for Australia, just in time to potentially play on the night of July 15 at the MCG in a friendly game against his old side, Manchester United, which is on a pre-season tour of Australia. About his game against his former club, Nani said, “I think the fans and everyone is expecting me to be able to perform with all my quality … But as a player, I always want to play, so if he (Tony Popovic) gives me five minutes, I will be ready.”

Nani won four English Premier League titles and the 2007-08 UEFA Champions League in his eight years career span at Man U. On the other hand, Victory finished a game short of last season’s A-League grand final and finished second in the regular season.

“One of the reasons of being here is try to bring more quality to the league and more experience and try and help the young talent to improve. So, there’s a lot of reasons for me to be here,” said Nani. Victory’s manager, Tony Popovic said that the inclusion of Nani is a great sign for them as he brings the ability to have a shot and score goals. He added that the former Man U footballer can help all of their players who have not won trophies before.
