In the game, Ilkay Gundogan scored a penalty goal for Germany and with full control, the team ended the first half with a 1-0 lead. An offside led to Germany’s goal being ruled out, which in the hindsight was one of the deciding factors. In the second half, a team effort from the three substitutes and the goal by Ritsu Doan levelled the score. In the 83rd minute, a free-kick from Itakura was converted into a goal by Takuma Asano and Japan took the lead. Germany tried their level best to convert the corners in the extra time, but Japan defended well to take home the victory.
