FIFA World Cup 2022: Riots in Belgium, Netherlands after Moroccan fans celebrate historic win
The Belgian police detained a dozen of rioters after water cannons and tear gas were used to stop the riots.
New Delhi: Riots broke in Belgium and Netherlands after Morocco won against the Belgian team in the ongoing FIFA World Cup. Some soccer fans began pelting stones when Moroccan immigrants were celebrating the victory on the roads. While there were riots in Brussels and other Belgian cities, the Dutch port city of Rotterdam was also affected by it.

The Belgian police detained a dozen of rioters after water cannons and tear gas were used to stop the riots. Two police officials also got injured while dispersing the rioting mob in Rotterdam. Brussels police said that vehicles were torched and stones were being pelted, and one person suffered facial injuries. The Dutch police said that the mob attacked police with fireworks and glass.
While it was a historic 2-0 win and a day for celebration for the Moroccan fans, it turned out to be a dark day in the history of football. Moroccan immigrants were celebrating as it was a huge upset of the tournament as Belgium stood third in the last FIFA World Cup in Russia. Some fans could not take it and hence violence broke out in various cities.
It was another game with a big upset with a goal being scored after the 70th minute of the game. This world cup has seen tiles turning twice before when Saudi Arabia won against Argentina and when Japan beat Germany. In the game, Morocco was giving a tough fight to the Belgian side and they looked like a better team out of two. A Moroccan goal was overturned after a review in the first half, the scoreline showed zero all. A fine assist from Sabiri and a goal from Romain Saiss gave Morocco their first goal. Ziyech was in action throughout and an assist from him led Zakaria Aboukhlal to score and seal the victory.
