Football Fever seeps in Lucknow as ‘Kolkata Derby’ makes debut in the ‘CITY OF NAWABS”

The “Kolkata Derby” between East Bengal and Mohun Bagan is scheduled to take place on September 2 in Lucknow.

New Delhi: Uttar Pradesh is set to witness history being unfolded in front of it as the state is set to the iconic ‘Kolkata Derby’ between Mohun Bagan and East Bengal. The match will be played as part of an effort to boost football in Uttar Pradesh.

State sports director RP Singh had informed the PTI that ‘preparations’ are currently underway as the city makes itself ready to embrace the Football fever of Kolkata. Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister, Yogi Adityanath is expected to mark his presence at this iconic match as well as 10,000 spectators.

However, the senior players will not be present in the derby match as they will be present in Hyderabad for the national camp.

How did the idea of a Kolkata Derby come to fruition?

Initially, AIFF President Kalyan Choubey and Sports Director RP Singh had met to discuss the testing of the newly installed floodlights, dressing room and other facilities.

During the discussion, the two agreed that hosting a friendly Kolkata derby between two of the oldest clubs in India would help fans take up the sport. Earlier, the Durand Cup game between Mohun Bagan and East Bengal was called off after Kolkata witnessed vehement protest in the backdrop of the RG Kar incident.

The Kolkata Derby is set to take place at the  K D Singh Babu Stadium in Lucknow.
