Gautam Gambhir announces captain for the Perth test in Press Conference

BCCI head coach Gautam Gambhir said that if Rohit Sharma is absent from the squad, vice-captain Jasprit Bumrah will fill in the role of captaincy.

New Delhi: Team India is set to leave for the Border Gavaskar Trophy 2024 which is set to take place later in the month. Prior to Team India’s departure, Gautam Gambhir attended the press conference on Monday before the team departed for Australia.

The Men in Blue are set to play a five-match Test series against the mighty Aussies in Down Under. India needs to win at least 3 matches in the 5-match series to keep their hopes alive to qualify for the World Test Championships.

The series will be a difficult yet crucial one as Rohit Sharma and co will be coming after suffering a humiliating 0-3 clean sweep against New Zealand in the Test series at home. Many hard questions were asked from Gambhir, the main being the captaincy issues that India is set to face in the first test at Perth.

Who will captain Team India in the Perth test?

Ahead of the highly-anticipated series against Australia, which will kick-start on November 22 in Perth, many reports have suggested that skipper Rohit is likely to miss the first match due to personal reasons.

However, the reports have not yet been confirmed by the Indian skipper. In the press conference, Gambhir remarked:

At the moment there’s no confirmation. Hopefully he will be available. We’ll let you know…

Furthermore, Gambhir added that if Rohit Sharma is absent from the squad, vice-captain Jasprit Bumrah will fill in the role of captaincy. When asked who will be filling in the role of opening slot for India, Gambhir remarked:

If Rohit is not available, we have got (Abhimanyu) Easwaran and KL (Rahul) in Australia. We will take a call…
