Glazer family to sell minority stake in Manchester United: Reports

Some reports suggest that it is all about bringing in an investor in the club rather than selling it altogether.

New Delhi: According to reports, the Glazer family is looking to sell a minor stake in the Manchester United club. The decision is being taken amid protests by the Man U fans asking for the Glazers to leave the club. There have been preliminary discussions about bringing in a new investor, Bloomberg reported.

According to reports by Sky Sports, Sir Jim Ratcliffe is considering buying a stake in Man U. Ratcliffe, the owner and CEO of Ineos Chemical Group, is the only known person in football to be wealthy enough to buy the club. However, the Red Devils have not made any comment on the reports. Some reports suggest that it is all about bringing in an investor in the club rather than selling it altogether.

The family is owning the club since 2005. Earlier too the Glazers effectively sold a minority stake in United because they floated the club on the New York Stock Exchange, where they sold 10 per cent of their shares.

Fans are really unhappy with the management and thus want the owners to sell United. Fans protested ahead of the game against Brighton on August 7. The protest also saw flags and banners saying, “Fight Greed. Fight for United. Fight Glazers,” and ‘Glazers Out’. Some people also accused the family to steal 1 billion Euros from the club. There have been various digital campaigns against the Glazers as #GlazersSellManUtd was trending on Twitter along with #GlazersOut. Manchester United fans were pouring in with their rage and comments on the internet.

The club is not having a great time on the field as well. Man U lost to Brighton 2-1, where the only goal scored for United was the own goal by Mac Allister. Later, Brentford scored four goals in the first half to beat United 4-0. This was Brentford’s first victory against United since February 1938.
